grube messel

client: competition

Roger Stephenson Architects were invited to participate in a competition to design a visitors/educational centre for the Messel Pit, near Frankfurt (World Heritage Site).

The building is split into two elements; the buildings/exhibitions (with their associated functions), and the walkway.  The main building elements are constructed of concrete and will engage with the ground as a more permanent element of the visitor’s centre, whilst in contrast, the timber frame walkway will appear to float above the ground designed as both a route and exhibition space (of the extracted bore holes of the site).
